Milk and fat
The majority of milk16 drunk in Canada is skim, 1% or 2%, just as recommended by Health Canada in Canada's Food Guide. The guide recommends that everybody drinks 500 mL (2 cups) every day.
Did you know that the same quantity of milk always contains the same vitamins and minerals?
Whether skim, 1, 2 or 3.25% fat, milk provides essentially the same amount of vitamins and minerals.
Where fat is concerned, moderation is key
It's important to make sure that we don't consume too much fat but it's equally important to get all the nutrients we need every day. Cheese can be a higher source of fat than other milk products. However, its high overall nutrient content still makes it a valuable food that can be enjoyed in moderation.
There's a wide variety of cheeses on the market, with various levels of fat content — read the labels to find the ones that better suit your needs and taste.
